Don Mullica was born September 25, 1925 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He married Patricia McClinton on June 7, 1980.

During his academic career, he acquired degrees from the University of Corpus Christi, Texas A&I in Kingsville, and Baylor University and also studied at the University of Florence and the University of Perguia in Italy. He authored more than 200 scientific publications.

He became a Mason at Waco Masonic Lodge on February 13, 1980, served as Master of the lodge in 1994, and was a member of all the available appendant masonic organizations. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, the American Chemistry Society, the Texas Society for Electron Microscopy, Sigma Xi fraternity, Beta Beta Beta, Biological Honor Society, and the American Crystallographic Association.

He worked as a Professor of Chemistry at Baylor for many years until his death on March 30, 1999.
